Ray Wong’s compositions have won him a dedicated following on the international scene as well as commendations and critical acclaim during his world tours. His highly original style in erhu, expressed through his original compositions, appeals to music fans with the fusion of the traditional and the modern.
As a recording artist, Wong has a discography of many popular pieces, such as the albums Flying Snowflakes, Touching, and Dreaming
of Beijing. His best known collections include Away from Home, Yesterday, Today, Feelings, For Love and Face Life with a Smile (sung by Johnny Yip and Frances Yip). The music he composed has won him a dedicated following on the international scene as well as Commendations and critical acclaim during his world tours. His compositions, Autumn Feelings, won the 1998 CASH Golden Sail Most Performed Works Award in the Local Serious Work category, and You and I on the Road of Love won the Love Song Award and Best Song Award at the Koruizawa International Choral Festival.
Wong has been teaching at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong for more than twenty years. He has therefore groomed many talents in music and keen lovers of the erhu. He has published A Collection of Erhu and Gaohu Music, A Selection of Erhu Compositions by Ray Wong, Popular Hits of Erhu Music by Ray Wong, Erhu Classics – Cantonese Music Category, 150 Popular Erhu Pieces as teaching aid for erhu music, thus contributing tremendously to its popularization as an art. He was presented with the ‘Outstanding Instructor Award for Professional Erhu’ by the Ministry
of Education and the Ministry of Culture of China in 2006, and is a winner of the Asia Pacific Creativity Industries Award – Hong Kong in 2017.
