Ngai Hon Yip is currently a gehu virtuoso with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and a member of its traditional music and ensemble groups. He also serves as an instructor of the Orchestra’s Instrumental Class and with the Cello Factory. He joined the Orchestra in 2002, and since then has gone on many of the Orchestra’s overseas tours to Austria, the UK, the US, Germany, Canada, France, Finland, Holland, Russia, Singapore and different provinces of China for performance and artistic exchange.
Ngai began learning the cello at the age of nine under Lai Siu-ming. He was at various times a member of the N.T.W.J.W. A. Ltd. Leung Sing Tak Primary School Chinese Orchestra, the Chinese orchestra of the Tai Po District Arts Advancement Association and the Hong Kong Juvenile & Youth Chinese Classical Orchestra. On leaving secondary school, he entered The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with major studies in gehu under Hung Lap and minor studies in cello under Ray Wang. Apart from his professional work, Ngai is also active in the local music circles, having been a member of the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association, Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra, YWCA Chinese Orchestra, Wang Kwong Chinese Orchestra and Wah Sing Chinese Folk Orchestra. He is also teaching cello in many primary and secondary schools, and has a wealth of experience teaching young people.
